What I Read: PARANORMAL ROMANCE FOR TEENS OMG!!!! (Part One)
Or: Why Is YA Romance Always So Corny?
Okay. Instead of sitting in shame, I guess I might as well admit that I read some YA paranormal romance. I can offer some explanation. First, free books from Penguin. (Thanks, Penguin!) Second, I really don’t get why paranormal romance is so popular, so I’m trying to get it. Third, quick and easy entertainment. They might be 350 pages, but you can knock them out in a few hours because the type is big and widely-spaced. And then you don’t feel like you wasted too too much of your life. Fourth, sometimes they’re kinda good, okay?!
Title: Vampire Academy
Author: Richelle Mead
This is the first in a series that is apparently already very popular. Basically, Rose is a vampire learning how to be a guardian for Lissa, her royal vampire friend. They’re different kinds of vampires, but whatever, you can see where this is going, probably. Rose has a hot teacher/trainer and there’s a lot of general badassery going on. (Also, a lot of swearing.) And some high school drama, too. I like to think of it as Gossip Girl meets vampires. That’s pretty much what it is.
Anyway, this book I’ll admit to kind of liking. For what it is (PARANORMAL ROMANCE OMG) it’s pretty good. Of course, the romance is the corniest thing in the world because the thing about YA novels is that people fall in love in about a second. I think I’ve figured it out, though. In young adults, the hormones are a-flowin’. There’s a lot of concern about CRUSHES/TRUE LOVE and also ANGST UGH LIFE IS SO UNFAIR. Thinking back on my young adulthood (because I am so old and wise now), I pretty much only remember writing angsty poetry while I listened to Evanescence and bemoaned my tragic lack of love life. That, and I was totally a weirdo. ANYWAY, point is that I guess romance is popular because it is such a significant part of teen life.
Best things about it: Higher writing level! It’s not like some vampire books which are written at a fourth-grade reading level. It was funny sometimes! The characters were developed mostly! Kinda like Gossip Girl! (XOXO)
Worst things about it: Corny romance! Obnoxious narrator! (She shoves her badassery into your face all the time.) Sometimes it’s slow!
I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads, and I stick to that. Read it for fun! It’s not the worst. It’s even kind of good!
